During the month of February, Vernon Hills High School will celebrate BLACK HISTORY MONTH. Today, February 13, 2017 DID YOU KNOW FACT OF THE DAY: GARRETT A. MORGAN was born in Paris, Kentucky on March 4, 1877. His inventions were driven by his desire to find solutions to “everyday” problems that he saw. He saw that people who fought fires and/or worked in tunnels where there was a possibility of inhaling toxic air had no means of protection. So, in 1912, he designed a safety hood and patented it as a “Breathing Device”, which later became known as the gas mask. The first recorded use of his “Breathing Device” was in 1916, when an explosion occurred in a tunnel being dug under Lake Erie. Morgan, along with his brother and other men wore the mask and rescued several of the workers. After witnessing an accident on the roadway, Morgan decided a device was needed to keep cars, buggies, and pedestrians from colliding. His traffic signal was designed to stand on a street corner and notify vehicles and walkers whether they should stop or go. After receiving a patent in 1923 for a 3-way traffic light, the rights to the invention were eventually purchased by General Electric. (Powell 2/13)

JSA(Junior State Of America)
JSA: Come to next Tuesday’s JSA meeting after school in the IRC. This week we will be debating a bill to mandate paid parental leave. With a few exceptions, current U.S. law requires businesses with more than 50 people to give 12 weeks of unpaid leave to employees who have worked at the company for at least a year. This is far less than most other industrialized nations. The UK mandates 12 weeks of paid leave and 53 weeks of unpaid leave. Sweden offers 40 weeks of paid leave and 43 weeks of unpaid leave to its parents. How can workplaces balance their budgets and allow parents to care for their own children during this crucial time of life? (Meister 2/13)
